Hi guys!!!! I’m so happy to be back to my blogging schedule and now that I am I have a bunch of things to share with you guys other than my new baby! It’s been two weeks since B.K entered this world and man have they been amazingly…well they have been a lot of things. One of the things that I wanted to do with this baby that I did not do with my last was to pump and bottle feed early on. With my son we waited too long because were scared into waiting a month by the nurses, they said it would cause nipple confusion if we started any sooner. Turns out waiting a month just scared Wy OFF the bottle. Not wanting that to happen again, we took the plunge and started B.K on the bottle a week after she was born and she took to it like a champ flawlessly switching from bottle to breast every time.
Now this couldn’t have come at a better time. Because B.K is pretty fierce when it comes to her sucking and because my milk supply took longer to come in this time, I got cracked nipples which then led to Mastitis in my right breast. Pumping my right breast became my only option to handle the engorgement that then followed because of B.K’s refusal to nurse off of that breast. So that’s what brings me to today’s review! Buying breast pumps can be down right confusing. Seriously. Not only are there SO many different brands out there, but on top of different brands there are different grades, different options, and a huge price range to choose from. So how do you find the perfect pump? Well to be completely honest with you? There’s no simple answer to that, but today I hope to at least shed some light on where you can start.
Everyone has their own opinions, and like always I do want to state that these are just MY opinions based off MY own experiences. Every woman is different, their bodies are different, their breastfeeding needs are different, and their incomes are different. SO with that being said, just because I may suggest something, please don’t feel like it’s something that you HAVE to do, or that it will be, or do the same thing for you as it did for me. I also want to mention that I am not a lactation consultant, nor am I a healthcare provider. I am just a breastfeeding momma with three kids.
Now that that is out of the way, lets begin. Moms love to give other moms advice. So when you ask a group of moms what kind of pump to purchase you will probably get about a dozen different answers. Some women swear by Medela pumps, some women now swear by Tommee Tippee pumps, and then the amount that they are willing to spend on a pump ranges as well. So how on earth are you supposed to know what is right for you when everyone is telling you something different? Well if you are lucky enough to be able to rent a pump from your hospital to try then great, but for those of us who that is not an option for, the next best thing is to talk to a professional.
When I say professional I DO NOT MEAN the sales person, or cashier at Babies R Us, Target, Wal-Mart, or any other big baby store. Even though they may or may not have had kids before, their main goal still is to SELL YOU SOMETHING, and they are probably NOT qualified to even give advice on breastfeeding. I remember walking into Babies R Us and listening to a woman babble on and on to a young mother about why she should spend an extra 100 dollars on a pump and then after convincing her to buy the pump saying that she didn’t have kids herself. It took everything in me not to step in and ask why she would push her to buy something that she herself had never used. And another thing people don’t realize is that a lot of stores have VERY strict policies on returning used, or opened pumps due to the health and sanitation factors. So when purchasing a pump you need to be well-informed.
So my advice to any mother looking for that perfect breast pump is to take the information that you have been given from all your friends and family who think they know best, and then find a store that will work with you to make sure you get the best deal and the best help in finding a pump that will work for you. With that being said I think I have found a store just like that.
Breast Pumps Direct is an online store that I came across that offered to send me their Ameda Purely Yours Ultra dual breast pump to review. I immediately loved their online store because they offered Ameda which is a brand that I used with my son and loved. My hospital lactation consultant actually suggested the brand to me two years ago. Not only does Breast Pumps Direct offer immediate assistance, but they also offer free shipping on any purchase of $70.00 or more, an easy place to find replacement parts so you don’t have to go searching the whole web after your dog chews up a tube, or your husband accidentally throws away a flange (yes this has happened to me), and they price match as well, so you know that you are getting the best deal out there.
If you’re not a fan of Ameda pumps, which is perfectly fine because like I said, not everyone is the same, they also carry Medela, Lansinoh, Avent, Hygeia, and many other trusted brands that you can choose from. Like I said before, they sent me the Ameda Purely Yours Ultra, so lets go over that one right now
I’m going to review this in lamans terms, why? Because I am a mom and I’m going to talk to you like a mom, not in a salesperson, or website description way. If you would like a full description and specs of this pump please click the link HERE, if you’d like a breastfeeding/pumping mom’s honest opinion of why she likes this product, then keep reading ;).
Reasons why I love this pump:
First off, the bag is adorable. NOT that it makes the pump amazing, but it is an added bonus Not only is it very timeless, but Ameda was smart and put their logo on the inside of the bag making it very subtle as well so when you are carrying your pump to and from work or else where, it doesn’t scream “BOOBY MACHINE IN HERE!” Also I love the pockets, I am half tempted to use this as a make shift back up diaper bag if I should ever need one, since I don’t travel much with my pump…hmmmmm.
Another added bonus of this pump package? It not only comes with BPA free bottles to pump into and then store your breast milk, but also a matching über convenient cooler with perfectly sized sturdy ice packs to keep your milk cold for up to 10 hours or until you can get to a refrigerator/freezer! You ladies know how much I love my organization, so this for me was so cool! Also included was a cardboard sheet that you can put on your refrigerator with information on how long your breast milk can stay good in all different conditions so you don’t waste, or let your milk go bad! Now for forgetful people like new moms and dads, this is a great idea.
A few things that come with the Ultra that I didn’t have with my last pump were the car charger, and the mat. Both very nice additions. The car charger adds a third way of powering your breast pump on the go (it can be battery operated and plugged into the wall as well), and the mat makes a nice sterilized place to lay your parts on if you are in a not so clean area.
The pump itself has separate dials for both suction and speed so you can customize the perfect combination to get the most out of your pumping sessions. I notice that I need a stronger suction with shorter intervals, in the beginning for let down, but then medium suction with longer intervals after. Every woman is different! And because this is a dual pump, there are two holders on top of the pump so that you can make sure that your bottles, or storage bags don’t tip over when you need to set them down!
The Ameda Purely Yours Ultra not only is easy to use (seriously it’s super easy), but it is also one of the safest to use. Because it uses the HygieniKit Milk Colletion System, which is a closed system that has a patented diaphragm, which prevents breast milk and moisture from entering into the pump’s tubing. No more having to clean ALL of your parts, because the tubes stay clean and won’t need washing after each use! The kit is also BPA free, and dishwasher safe (my favorite two words), and can convert to a manual pump (that comes with it), which with my old Ameda saved the day when I did an all day 60 mile bike event with my husband and had to pump out in the middle of a cornfield. Yes you read me right, a cornfield. If you need more proof of it’s safety benefits the HygieniKit is the only milk collection system approved right now by the FDA to protect against cross contamination and it also safeguards the purity of expressed milk from bacteria and viruses by keeping the milk and outside air separate from each other. Now doesn’t that sound great?
In all honesty this pump had me at dishwasher safe and easy to clean because for me with a 7-year-old, 2-year-old, newborn, and husband, extra cleaning is not really what I want right now. I also loved that they give you three different sizes of flanges (the things that go on your ta tas) to accommodate your ever-changing breast sizes as well. I have some itty bitties, so it’s nice to know that they care to include us little ones as well :). If you are larger, or the flanges are not the right fit they also offer extra sizes on their site.
I love this pump. Not just because they sent it to me, but because this one, just like the one I used before with my son works well and does the job. I trust the Ameda brand because so far they have not steered me wrong, but again for those of you who have a favorite brand already, or maybe want to try something different, go for it. We are all different like I said. So please go to BreastPumpsDirect.com if you are looking to purchase a pump either manual or electric, need breastfeeding accessories, or parts to an old pump that you may have lost, or even just to get an idea of the different pumps that are out there. And hey, while you’re at it, if you purchase one, let me know what you get and what you think of it here, maybe it can help another mommy out as well :).
